The "Civilian Control of the Military" rule, as important as it is to US military structure and liberty, has been abused for generations by the installment of bureaucrats at the top, rather than warriors. It was rumored somewhere that past kings of Siam or thereabouts gave their bureaucratic posts, fittingly, to eunuchs. From all I've seen, the nature of bureaucracy hasn't actually changed much in the centuries since. It's like a good Southern sweet tea in a Dixie June to finally have a SecDef who knows what national defense is all about.

MAJ (Join to see) A video showing the SecDef arriving at the Pentagon on Jan 21 and being greeted by GEN Dunford caught my attention!
As GEN Dunford is holding his salute, Mr Mattis extends his right hand to shake hands while ignoring the salute! CIVILAIN CONTROL AT WORK!

You need people in these roles who really know what it means to run a military campaign. I can read, study, dabble, and discuss all I want about military tactics; but until I have lived and breathed them it doesn't matter. I always thought the people in posts like Secretary of Defense and Department of Homeland Security had this past experience. Now I feel more confident.

CSM Charles Hayden - Mr. Mattis knows the correct way to interact but I'm glad the others still show him how much they respect his past.

I ran across this one today and I think it sums up General Mattis pretty well.
"I come in peace, I didn't bring artillery. But I am pleading with you with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, I'll kill you all."
Marine General James Mattis, to Iraqi tribal leaders

I can't believe we now have this guy running our military. It is like my team winning the Superbowl, my birthday, Christmas, and getting my tax return all rolled into one. We now have someone who knows and cares about my brothers and sister in arms. I know he will do right no matter what the political repercussions are. He already did it under Obama knowing that it would cost him his job. A great leader for sure.
