I’m a newly promoted SGT. I was hoping that I could get some insight on some things I can do to be a better NCO. I’m pretty sure I know what direction I want to go and what kind of NCO I want to be. But any help would be appreciated.

It’s been awhile for me but here goes.
As far as taking care of your men/ women, you come last.
They get gear first, loaded first, fed first.
Let them know that you care about their welfare. But, also let them know that you are in charge. Orders are not questions. Nor are they points for negotiation.

I was infantry, and when I became an NCO, I took to heart what the Corps taught us. Mission accomplishment always comes first. Troop welfare is a distant second. With that being said, always take care of your crew. You have to be able to separate Philip from Sgt Cluff in your relationship with them. I was good friends with many of my guys, but they knew there was a difference between me and my job. Take advice, take criticism, take suggestions and take questions. But when those times arise where you have to give orders, give orders. Period. Those should be answered them doing what they're told. Instill loyalty amongst your crew so that they take care of each other and do what needs to be done.
What I think most of the other NCOs I had dealt with forgot, always try to make them better. You want your guys to be able to replace you. You want them to be better leaders themselves. Push them and give them the freedom to lead if possible. Delegation of authority is a tight wire to walk, but if you do it right, your team will shine.

Thank you! I like the point of separating me from my job. I think getting to know my guys on a personal level is key but also still having the ability to tell them what needs to be done and not get resistance comes from team building and mutual respect.

I always figured it makes it a lot easier if we were friendly. Ultimately, it's not that important, as long as they did what they were supposed to do.
If you're in the combat arms, it also could present it's own dilemma. It sounds cheesy, but you might have to send your friend out to do something that you know he's not coming back from.
Good luck.

You should really be asking the senior NCOs around you - those you respect. The question is just too broad for anything meaningful from people like me. I’ll offer only this - take care of the troops under your command. That’s always the first priority for any NCO.

Thank you for your input. I do have my SR NCO’s that I value their opinion a ton. I was just looking for some more insight!
