Chicago and Denver Sheriffs Quitting Over Vaccine Mandates

From the story: Multiple sheriffs in jurisdictions near Chicago said they will not respond to fill the potential gap in police manpower created by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain and DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick said they have historically had no problem sending deputies to help the Chicago Police Department (CPD) in cases where officers were in emergency distress or under duress, but that the situation Lightfoot has created does not fit those parameters (PoliceTribune).
https://policetribune.com/illinois-sheriffs-say-they-wont-send-deputies-to-help-fill-gap-created-by-chicagos-vaccine-mandate/ From WGN9: The Cook County Sheriff’s department already works with Chicago police in some targeted high crime neighborhoods. Cook County only has 300 sworn officers so their presence wouldn’t come close to filling the void that could be created if Mayor Lightfoot follows through on her threat to suspend the thousands of Chicago officers who had still not reported their vaccination status as of Monday afternoon (WGN9). Chicago is not the only city to face turmoil due to vaccine mandates. Fox31: More than two dozen of Denver’s first responders have quit over the city and county’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for employees (Fox31). https://kdvr.com/news/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccine/denver-vaccine-mandate-police-fire-sheriff-quit-fired/ From The Daily Wire: A 911 caller in Denver described the experience as “terrifying” when her emergency call was left on hold. (The Daily Wire).

Sad times when people would rather give up their career than step up to help beat the virus....

PFC David Foster If they were to implement an education requirement, you can bet it would ONLY apply to new hires or new positions. Almost every single one of these jobs has an employment contract which lays out the requirements for the position. Adding a new requirement is a violation of that contract. Unless you do a large propaganda campaign to get public support for forcing contract violations.

Additionally, adding an education requirement is not the same as requiring an emergency medical procedure during a non-emergency. Can you imagine CPD requiring all officers to have an appendectomy? I mean what happens if the appendix bursts while chasing a criminal? That is a risk to the officer AND the public. Appendixes must go.

Of course that is insane, and we wouldn't require it. But we do not flinch at requiring emergency use only vaccines for healthy officers.

America was founded on individual responsibility and refusing to COMPEL any action. Sure, there were restrictions on what you COULD do, especially if it impacted others. But the concept of FORCING people to take specific actions was anathema to our founders.

If we agree that the government has a right to COMPEL citizens to take certain actions for the good of others (I must get vaxxed for YOUR protection) then we admit that the government has the right to compel. And once we grant the government that authority, it WILL use it. It is what governments do.

In a way, I am too late with this argument. We already lost when SCOTUS approved the Obamacare mandate. And here we are. The government now believes it had the authority to not only tell citizens what NOT to do (laws like don't murder) but what they MUST do.

It only gets worse from here.

Yes, this is surrendering freedom. There is a absolutely nothing else it could be.

And, to be clear, I am vaxxed. Have been since WAY before that mandates were even discussed. This isn't about the vaccine, it is about the mandate.

SFC Casey O'Mally if you want to know the truth, this argument was lost in 1905 when the Supreme Court ruled in Jacobson v. Massachusetts.

CW4 Guy Butler Yes... ish. The big differences in Jacobson were the difference between a state mandate and the proposed federal mandate (I disagree with both, but I disagree LESS with states doing it) and the presence of an actual emergency.

IMHO, COVID is not an emergency. The death rate, when treated, is pretty dang low. Even untreated, the death rate is still pretty low. Compared with smallpox, COVID is a nonentity.
Additionally, a smallish fine ($160 in today's dollars) is MUCH different than loss of career or loss of ability to travel (AKA removal of liberty without due process).

Yes, the principle was established in Jacobson. But the way it is being applied today (and being threatened to apply) is radically different.

PFC David Foster It's even sadder when government coercion is used economically deprive citizens in an advertised free-country of their fundamental rights. I'm vax'd and personally think that choosing not-to-be is foolish. Other accommodation is available (testing etc); Lightfoot's mandate is simply the misguided application of power.
