"Those living in close proximity to the military base can expect to hear small arms fire at any given time while scheduled training sessions can produce louder sounds from tanks, artillery and mortar fire, according to Fort Riley’s website. This can also lead to tremors which can cause buildings to shake."

People really are still confused by hearing loud booms and SAF when they live next to Riley? I lived in Manhattan when I was stationed there, I could hear artillery sometimes. When my ex husband first lived with me, the first night he heard it he jumped out of bed "Wtf was that?" I said "The Army." "Sounds like WW3!" I just laughed.

It's pretty normal if you live in Manhattan or JC that you'll hear artillery and stuff. I'm confused that people who live there or near any mliitary base are always surprised by it. Like being stationed at JBLM this mom group I was in and they'd complain about night training. "Why do they have to do all that stuff at night?" I laughed and asked if they were serious. "Yes." I said um...because war happens at night too so...we have to be able to fight at night time.

When I was at Offutt, people complained the twice a year they did an exercise and had jets flying about "why are there jets flying?" Um it's an Air Force base...and they advertised there would be an exercise going on.

Fort Sill was loud around the clock. You get used to it. When I PCSed to Fort Gordon, or whatever they call it now, I couldn't sleep for two week. I finally realized I needed gunnery to waft me off to dreamland..

We are a military community. Most people know that when they move here, the base is hard to miss, we’re averaging a murder a day so in a community where we thought we’d be safer we can’t tell if it’s one or the other, The base does a good job keeping the public informed.

Maj Kim Patterson - I lived on Tuttle Creek Lake, so seldom heard the gunnery at the house. But folks on the west side of Manhattan hear and feel it. A murder a day? I hadn't heard that.

According to the Riley Sherriff's 2021 Report, there was one homicide in the county,: 40 rapes.
