One award REALLY means something to me from my Trooper years, from rescuing 2 badly abused babies. They were kidnapped from social services custody in Front Royal VA, by their mom and BF who has severely beaten and burned them and both were going into septic shock and dehydration. Drunk, felon, woman-beating, BF had dipped the 1 year old’s butt in boiling water for pooping his diaper and then when his 2.5 year old brother kicked the bf for hurting his brother, he was savagely beaten. When both went into shock, the adult thugs took them to the local ER where docs called local cops and the adults fled before police arrived, who had social workers get an emergency custody order for 2 severely injured and abused John Does. Mom sneaked in the hospital that night and snatched them, wearing her CNA scrubs. A nurse saw her, confronted her, chased her to the parking lot and got a tag number, which went into NCIC. 6 hours later, I stopped the BF for speeding and arrested him for no license on I-40 near Asheville, then arrested mom on theNCIC hit. Both babies were rushed to ICU and recovered fully, then sent back to VA and eventually adopted by a family out of Richmond. It was so bad, the resident pediatrician at the hospital, a pretty young doc a few years older than myself, broke down and cried when I interviewed her, and I did too. Mom ,who was pregnant not yet showing, had a baby 5 months later and she too was adopted. Mom was sentenced to3 years and BF got 6. I went to Front Royal VA, where I have familial roots, to testify. A sad but rewarding case. I visited both boys everyday in the hospital and brought them toys and was allowed to feed them. I got permission from my Troop CO to take them to the airport with their Virginia social worker in my patrol car (we had several child seats at troop HQ). When I stopped at the metal detector at the boarding gate, they realized I wasn’t going with them and both reached out to me and cried. I cried like a baby myself leaving the airport. Still haunts me 37.5 years later.
