LTC Vindman retires, was he right or wrong? What about the second and third order effects?

Aside from the usually partisan (and superficial) comments regarding LTC (R) Vindman, is there a lesson to be learned here? We had a sitting US senator holding up promotion for 1000 senior officers to allow for his promotion. Whistleblowing. Polarizing politics and the politicalization of the military seems to be here for the duration. While the retired could easily just take pot shots from Ft. Living Room, here's my question. How can currently serving members truly remain apolitical? In a world where one callus post can end your career, use some judgment if you elect to weigh in. Was he right? Would you have done the same? Was he dead wrong?

I will not agree with some comments the he should had reported it when in reality he work for the President. We took a oath and was to report it to the chain of command not congress or any others agency. He was unprofessional regardless how you see it. If we aren’t countable with our job we request to be move or resign. Too easy

I found his pointing to his OER to be amusing. He sat there and with a straight face said "look how good I am. This is what my OER (although he called it something else....) says and she signed it."

Look let's just be honest. We all know that OER and NCOER are inflated. It's a known issue and has been going on since time immortal.

I would make a fair wager that he actually wrote his own OER and handed ot to his civilian supervisor for signature.

The Roman Republic fell when there was so much partisan politics that nothing could be done positive for the Empire, the populace lost faith in the government and the only stability was the professional standing Army, which took over and established a military dictatorship, which by the way the empire flourished for over 300 years with a higher standard of living than mankind has enjoyed till modern times. It didn’t make much difference who the emperor was for the citizens as the military enforced a relatively high level of justice. At least compared to that offered by a government that openly bought and sold Senate seats. Does any of this have a sound of familiarity?

The constitution nor rules of war mention LTC but if they are something wrong should they not do/say something? If they see someone torturing a prisoner Should they say the rules of war and the Geneva convention don’t say LTC? If they see a soldier doing something wrong should they say army regulations don’t say LTC?

As soldiers, we all are entitled to our own opinions. But, as soldiers, we also fall under the oath that we take to obey the orders of the Officers appointed over us. And as soldiers, we all fall under the UCMJ - NOT the Civilian Justice system. The President, any President of the USis the Elected Leader of the Nation, and the ex-officio Commender in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States.

LTC Vindman had the absolute right to his opinion . BUT his responsibility was to address those opinions to his Chain of Command - NOT the media, not one political party or the other. When he went outside of his supervisors in the Chain of Command, he violated his oath of office and Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. He should have been subject to trial by Courts Martial.

If LTC Vindman thought that the President was wrong he should have addressed hi chain-of-command, which he did not. He jumped the chain-of-command for his own political gain. Had he used the proper method to express his concerns the whole situation would have been different. Leave politics out of the equation. If you have a problem addressed it through your chain-of-command and let the "system" do it's job.

Man i feel bad for the dude losing his retirement. I get it I truly do but there are rules and regulations that you have to conform to. He didn’t. Do I think he should have lost his retirement? No. He should have been able to finish out his 20 with a letter of reprimand riding some desk some where.

He took something he overheard and passed it on, not only to his chain of command but to his brother and ultimately the world. What he overheard turns out to be false. He was not fit to be in the service at all. He was gossiping like a little bitch. Period, why are we we still talking about this fool when so much else is going on with our government?
