Why is the Army getting softer in terms of discipline? Do Marine recruiters have a smaller quota to reach than the Army recruiters?
As a PFC, all the time I hear these old school NCO’s talk about “back in my day” this, “back in my day that... i’m not mad at them. Yes, we have issues with EO and SHARP. I agree THAT SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE FIXED. But can we also have more discipline, teach other young Privates to have pride in their uniform, bearing, and better standards? It starts at Basic Combat Training. Why are we making it softer? The Marines aren’t. U.S. Soldiers aren’t the same as U.S. Marines. Marines are more so being taught to kill these days no matter their MOS.(and even go through a couple extra weeks of Combat Training). How are we only going to have ten weeks of BCT, and not train harder?

The "new guys are getting soft" has been said since 1775.
Those NCO's who are saying that the new crop are soft? Yeah, their NCO's said the same thing about them. And theirs about them, on and on, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

And the damn thing is, as a PFC, you have yet to even begin to barely experience the "back in my day" statements. Discipline starts at both ends. New troops need to realize that they aren't back on the block anymore. Leaders need to start enforcing standards again without fear of losing their career (and possible freedom). The issue(s) you see and hear are found up and down the ladder

Softer? Basic Training is actually harder compared to previous times…
During the 1990s, families could visit recruits after red phase. My mother and brother saw me on a Sunday when I was in blue phase. Visits are no longer allowed until graduation
During the 1980s, recruits were allowed to drink alcohol on Sundays and could smoke cigarettes when on break. Booze and tobacco are off limits today

I went to AIT in 2013 and we still were able to drink lol. Changed around June 2013 for us

As a former DS I would respectfully disagree. Basic is not harder. I wrote letters and got a 2min phone call (2001). I was lucky to even get that. Basic trainees nowadays are posting on Facebook from basic, not AIT and "will" get their phones every night. I don't know of any commander that would chance getting relieved for denying a basic trainee a phone call. Commanders are more paranoid than dull Sergeants. I've seen it.

I went through OSUT November 89-March 90. At no time were we allowed family visits except during our break between basic and AIT. We were also not allowed alcohol or cigarettes until graduation. I went to Benning so not sure where you went through basic but none of that was afforded to us
