When will US astronauts walk on Mars? Will we at all? Or does it even matter? Will it be privately or publicly funded? Or both?

You and Christopher Nolan both. But you cant run before you can walk. Or walk before you can crawl. We're barely sitting up on our own at this point.

In the next 20 years International Astronauts will walk on Mars funded by joint governments but principally the US. They will leverage the enormous savings in rocketry built by SpaceX reusable rockets. It's hard to say whether Elon Musk's vision of a sustainable colony on Mars (requiring 1 million pax-possible in his estimation by the decrease per person cost of one way transport to $500,000) will ever happen. Not because humans aren't explorers, and not because SpaceX wont be able to get the price tag so low, but because stronger AI and nano-tech may make human habitation projects irrelevant.

I would love to see the renewed patriotism, pride in country, and unity that a robust space exploration program brings this country. I say lets make the 10 year challenge.
