Are changes needed to Basic Training?
Psychology and Basic Combat Training by Robert G. Dixon
http://smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/psychology-and-basic-combat-training
LTC Dixon has published to the Small Wars Journal what I believe is an amazingly intuitive article on steps we should take to improve our current approach to basic training as well as identifying fruitful avenues that may lead to even greater gains. Please read the whole article and let me know what you think.
I suspect some will have a knee jerk reaction to his proposals, but consider for a moment that tradition ("the way we have always done it"), consensus, doctrine, and colloquial experiences do not equate to fact based best practices or inherently represent any kind of optimal strategy.

Yes, they need to stop treating recruits like delicate little flowers and get back to the days of breaking them down to build them back up. They need to stop letting anyone and everyone through and leaving the gaining unit at their first duty station to deal with someone that never would have made it through 10 or 20 years ago because they couldn't hack it mentally or emotionally. Stop holding their hands and wiping their butts.

SSG Sweeney--changes are always needed in Basic and other types of training. Ideally, returning combat vets should help train the trainers!

Yes, changes are need in basic training. I think he made some very valid points. My favorite one was this one....Adapt Drill Sergeant School to develop experts at training (instead of experts at just following Programs of Instruction)
