A Eurasian eagle-owl named Flaco has been on the loose for a week in New York City after a vandal cut through his mesh enclosure at the Central Park Zoo. Despite efforts to trap him and almost around-the-clock monitoring by zoo staff, the owl has so far evaded capture. With a wingspan of five to six feet, Eurasian eagle-owls are one of the world’s largest owl species, according to the nonprofit The Peregrine Fund. They have a striking appearance—bright orange eyes, ear tufts and mottled feathers—and are native to Europe, Asia and parts of northern Africa. In the wild, the birds will gobble up anything from small mammals to woodpeckers to fish and amphibians using their excellent eyesight and sharp hearing to silently swoop down on their prey.

Wonder how big of a celebrity it will be after it swoops down and gets one of those froo-froo mini-yapping dogs as take out...
On a more serious note -- "Flaco’s escape was likely intentionally orchestrated". While some nutjob was responsible for the animal releases at the Dallas Zoo, who knows on this one. About 15 years ago or so zoos were going though a spat of animal rights activists breaking in and releasing animals. Many died because they weren't equipped to survive "in the wild" or in society as a whole, but hey - as long as they had their activism punchcard validated. Not saying this is that, but with the rise of incidents happening again, you have to wonder.

Sgt John H. I can sit in the woods for hours listening to them if they keep me entertained that long.
