How can I start a discussion about the Civil Air Patrol an official Auxiliary of the United State Air Force?

You can start by saying they are more elite than the Rangers and the SF and then you can watch the s--- fly! Oh! I'm sorry. You want a discussion - not an argument.

I'm a 31 yr Retired Veteran from Army, ARNG, ANG and AF Reserves. I started with CAP because the AF Regs stated a need to show community involvement to get promoted. Never knew much about it prior. CAP was an easy choice being co-located at the base. After 15 years I can say with open eyes it serves many very good and noble needs and service to the communities and country on many levels. Emergency services aside, activities are mostly concentrated in Cadet programs educating and developing future leaders in military, business and government. Being an all volunteer organization (except for the HQ admin) under the 1st Air Force it is a great way for teaching discipline, motivation and what the services are structured like. I've observed across the country that levels of quality vary greatly unit to unit however, because, well, it's a volunteer service. Real leaders stand out and have a tremendously positive effect on the youth. Others never seem to grasp the reg's objectives, big picture idea the sacrifice and personal development necessary to provide the youth what they deserve in leadership and programs. Ironically, what leadership deficiencies I observed in the military units I was assigned seemed to carry into CAP. Ex-military pilots in particular don't necessarily make good CAP leaders, they make good pilots. Ex-enlisted from all branches and combat officers, I observed, are superb leaders and motivators. A common choice for home school parents to expose their children to resources that provide STEM programs and competitions in cyber, aerospace education from rocketry to pilot scholarships and a myriad of outdoor programs. Sure, some parents treat it as a day care of sorts, others get intimately involved while many others see it as a way to give their child a chance for a better future. It is what you make it.
