I'm not sure if diagramming sentences helped me learn anything, but I can't see where today's students are better writers having been denied access to this practice. As a writer, I frequently break "the rules of writing", but at least I know that I'm breaking them. How about you? Did you learn to diagram sentences? Did it help?

It is a much overlooked skill. It helps in being able to communicate concisely and at a high level. Much of misunderstanding, both on the part of the sender and the receiver, is due to not being able to parse sentences as intended.
I haven't explicitly used that skill since attempting to read some philosophical and medieval religious arguments during college, but it is something that becomes ingrained into your reading habits.

We still teach this skill in our high school. I did learn this when I went to school. I was taught it again when I went to college by our French professor. It did improve my understanding on how to become a better writer
