Despite the weird aside about the AR-15, (a rifle is a rifle, and it takes fortitude to confront someone armed with one, I just expect such fortitude from anyone wearing a police uniform), this article covers much of what's wrong with government failing in its responsibilities and then demanding a curtailment of individual rights in the aftermath of its own failures.

Good article. FL news had reported crime was down in FL as a whole but up this year in Broward County. I cannot understand why there wasn't some concern about the warning signs. Serious leadership problem IMHO.

How is it that Sheriff’s in this country are elected to their positions? Are there any other LE officials similarly elected?

MSgt Neil Greenfield I can't speak for the entire country, but in my state, Vermont the Attorney general is elected in all 14 counties, the Attorney general is elected and two side Judges are elected in each county as well as all 14 county Sheriff's are elected.

In Texas, sheriffs and constables are elected officials. In addition, a town or city marshal may also be elected, but this is only used in Coleman (4700 pop.) and San Angelo (100K pop.).
