"John Boehner was a terrible, very bad, no good speaker of the House. Under his leadership, Republicans pursued an unprecedented strategy of scorched-earth obstructionism, which did immense damage to the economy and undermined America’s credibility around the world.

Still, things could have been worse. And under his successor they almost surely will be worse. Bad as Mr. Boehner was, he was just a symptom of the underlying malady, the madness that has consumed his party.

For me, Mr. Boehner’s defining moment remains what he said and did as House minority leader in early 2009, when a newly inaugurated President Obama was trying to cope with the disastrous recession that began under his predecessor.

There was and is a strong consensus among economists that a temporary period of deficit spending can help mitigate an economic slump. In 2008 a stimulus plan passed Congress with bipartisan support, and the case for a further stimulus in 2009 was overwhelming. But with a Democrat in the White House, Mr. Boehner demanded that policy go in the opposite direction, declaring that “American families are tightening their belts. But they don’t see government tightening its belt.” And he called for government to “go on a diet.”

This was know-nothing economics, and incredibly irresponsible at a time of crisis; not long ago it would have been hard to imagine a major political figure making such a statement. Did Mr. Boehner actually believe what he was saying? Was he just against anything Mr. Obama was for? Or was he engaged in deliberate sabotage, trying to block measures that would help the economy because a bad economy would be good for Republican electoral prospects?

We’ll probably never know for sure, but those remarks set the tone for everything that followed. The Boehner era has been one in which Republicans have accepted no responsibility for helping to govern the country, in which they have opposed anything and everything the president proposes. "

Capt Walter Miller - The Republican Party does not attack the country, they attack the Democrat "leadership" (and that's an oxymoron, for sure) and its progressive/socialist, immoral, corrupt, and unethical policies that are destroying our country.

Even as a millionaire you can deduct so much from your taxes by claiming all kinds of expenses related to your job, business, or property. If you pay more than 20% of your income in taxes with a 1.2 million annual income, you need to get a better accountant.

Cpl Tou Lee Yang - I pay what I owe, nothing more , nothing less. I take the deductions I am authorized to take and I do not play games with questionable deductions, tax havens, etc. That is why I am incensed when people say we do not pay our fair share.

Jean, you can say whatever you want about yourself paying your fair share. But I seriously doubt it's in the 30% range like teachers and bus drivers. The truth of the matter is, even Warren Buffet said he pays less than his secretary. Who are we to believe? You, a self proclaimed 1% or a verified 1%?

Cpl Tou Lee Yang - Not sure what your definition of "verified" is... Let's just say that I surpass the government's definition of the top 1%. And, yes, the tax I paid was in the 30% range. Again, how much of my money that I make do you think I should give the government? Do you think that 30% or so is not enough when almost 50% pay no taxes and the top 5% pay 95% of the taxes paid?

SGM Steve Wettstein - Oh dear. Personal insults are the only response.

As I always say, sheep should certainly be treated like sheep.

Capt Walter Miller - This is why nobody is willing to engage you in conversation or take you seriously. SSG Palmer, who is a Democrat by his own words, in another post states that he finds certain Republicans to be reasonable and your only response is to fire back with "they are particularly horrid".

So I'll ask you. What is your business on RP? I have yet to read a single comment, or discussion you have started or partaken in that was constructive to a conversation and not inflammatory.

Your constant need to attack people you don't agree with or make derogatory remarks about those people who differ from you ideologically only points to your own massive inferiority complex and intolerance of other people. Your need to start "conversations" with the most inflammatory subject lines and obnoxious drivel that supports your party line beliefs, is not meant to open the mind, but rather to force it shut and start a closed minded argument. What exactly does this accomplish again?

Finally, on a personal note, I find you to be an incredibly disrespectful individual, thoroughly incapable of intellectual thought that does not toe the party line, who goes around speaking in a derogatory manner to all who don't agree with you in every facet, all the while never looking past your own blinders and calling others "sheep". Now, I apologize in advance if you have an actual undiagnosed developmental disability up there in your brain, but that type of thought is something to be expected from a person in the 5th grade at most.
