Are you thankful that the Federal Government shutdown has been averted on the third day?
This evening the House approved a bill to re-open the government on the third day and the day after the weekend when many government offices were closed, anyway.
The Congress sent the package to President Trump’s desk to end the three-day government shutdown as Senate Democrats backed off their opposition.
The bill passed 266-150, following votes earlier in the day in the Senate.
The temporary spending bill would keep the government open until Feb. 8. The bill arrived at the White House late Monday and the president was expected to sign it.
Democrats agreed to re-open the government after Republicans assured them the Senate would soon consider legislation that would protect illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children. It was a stark contrast from the Senate Democratic position just a few days ago.
Here are the response choices I posted that were stripped when this was changed to a status update:
Are you thankful that the Federal Government shutdown has been averted?
1. Yes, I am thankful and not surprised the Federal government shutdown was averted.
2. No, I think the Dreamer issue was important enough to shut the government down.
3. No, I am not glad for another reason.
4. Yes, I am glad that the shutdown ended but I am surprised it ended so quickly.

FYI, for the past twenty years or more kicking the can down the road is business as usual in Congress MSgt (Join to see). I lived in the shadow of Washington, D.C since I was first assigned here in 1989.

CPT Jack Durish - your right, it just feels great to be working again, instead of being on the sideline.

Who says it's been averted? Tapped down the road, maybe, but hardly averted. The response of illegal immigrants to the Democrats blinking warns us that there most likely won't be another and the government could be shut down until the next election. Maybe then We the People will clean House, Senate too...

CPT Jack Durish the so-called shutdown occurred on a weekend when most government offices were closed.
1. The outpouring of opposition to the shutdown to Democrat senators caused them to reverse position very quickly in this election year when 1/3 of the senate is up for reelection.
2. Yes, short term TDY was canceled for our friend SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL and the $100K death gratuity was postponed for the two AH-64 pilots who were killed. 3.
3. Most of the Federal Government activity was not significantly affected, Military pay was not cut off yet, the commissary system was schedule to shutdown after COB on Tuesday. Retired, SBP, SGLI, Social Security benefits and VA disability were unaffected by this shutdown ....
4. The Democrats may try to push DAC extension in immigration reform. However in light of the election year nd the opposition expressed thus far they may well rethink that hard stance.

LTC Stephen F. - It did seem like political theater, didn't it? Will the Democrats rethink their strategy? They do, all the time. Like all politicians, they are opportunists, not guided by principle. And yes, there was lots of popular pressure, but which shall they listen to? That is the question...

CPT Jack Durish - I think Democrats will only rethink their strategy now that they know people blamed them for the shutdown. I will say that not all politicians have no principle, I have met a couple who do, including a Democrat (Charlie Stenholm of Texas). Generally speaking though, I don't credit Democrats with having principles -- or the principles they do have are really bad.

LTC Stephen F. - regarding your #3, true, the commissary was still open, but they didn't get any deliveries during the shutdown (as one of the local managers put it, "We'll be open until closing time on Tuesday with stock on hand," so when I took the kids shopping on Sunday afternoon, the produce section was pretty much empty.
