The question is can you go back to a ship (USS ANZIO (CG 68), in my case) or a station or command you used to work at? I'll compare two personal experiences. One person served on a ship and hasn't visited it in over 20 years since the commissioning and his subsequent move away to other "jobs" before he retired.  The other one went back a few times, and visited the ship a number of times in various locales. What are your thoughts, experiences, ideas. "Why HAVEN'T YOU gone back?" or "Why DID you go back?"

I want to go back to Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. It was my first phase of my original AIT and I loved everything about that place. My friends, school, hospital, and the PX. Just everything there was awesome. I was in of the last classes to go through it before the school moved to Fort Lee, Virginia. I'm actually thinking about visiting it after this deployment. It's only 2 hours away from home. I really don't have any pictures of it and I want some for old time sake.

As much as i tried to avoid going back to APG after AIT and Instructor assignments, DA found me and my H designator and kept me returning....but...I did not retire there. Instead, I took an assignment to Ft. Sill, Ok; was assigned to the School house there and then retired.

I am surprised that nobody else has responded yet, but I'll give you my take from an Army perspective.  In the Army, it is common for Soldiers to return to previous commands or installations.  I don't really know how this compares to being assigned to a ship multiple times in a career.  I would imagine that it could be more difficult for the ship simply because it is much smaller and has less positions available than, say, going back to a Division like the 101st at Ft. Campbell.
