For example you're day for promotion arrives you have the 4187 already completed and signed by the commander. Can you opt to pin you're self instead of waiting for formation that could not be happening on that day ? I've seen a Lt become a Captain without being pinned by the commander he pinned himself. Just curious.

If you have orders with an effective date.. your getting paid... Let the public promotion happen in due time. Remember, its as much for your peers, and new subordinates as much as you.

So you made the points, but the BN formation is next Friday. Can you; heck yes! Should you; oh no, no, no. Promoting yourself while not in the presence of the Officer who is responsible for your promotion. Not publicly publishing the orders. Violating a unit policy and ceremony that your CSM thinks is nearly biblical. You'll get to wear the stripes until you get spotted, then the pain will come in waves. I would advise against it.

To add, it should be someone you felt had a greater part in your personal/professional growth leading to that promotion. Commander? Meh. First line or someone else closer in the Chain of Command or family? Yes.

Enjoy the dog and pony and let the CoC take a short time to recognize your accomplishment. Just draw the line at the huge mallet to the chest.

I believe just having published orders is sufficient authority to pin on your new rank on the appropriate day. However, although it may be 'authorized' it's usually not a good idea as Military Custom normally dictates that your unit (with your family if desired) promote you. Many of us have learned this from personal experience and had to take off the rank we put on in the morning so the boss could pin it on again in the afternoon. It's a good custom as it allows the unit to recognize and appreciate the change (your professional growth) and be part of it - and part of the traditional promo party that you'll finance!

Even 'Customs' have exceptions....if your pin on date is during a PCS... show up to the next unit with your new rank. If you have to lead a formation or execute a mission that requires you to be at that rank, put it on! Sometimes customs overrules common sense, but normally they work hand in hand. My experience of violating 'custom' was an 'opportunity to learn'. Cheers

I have seen soldiers who meet all requirements, complete school, orders published in iperms and had to wait for month to be pinned. I believe it is discouraging and affect readiness.
