I have seen spouses bleed the family dry and put them in so much debt that it took years to pay off the debt, even after returning as much as they could, and it almost cost them their security clearance/job/career.

I have seen others successfully manage their money while their Soldier was deployed.

So put them on an allowance or trust them?

I believe in always having a safety net, or plan b. I think it takes at least 5 years to truly trust someone especially when it comes to finance. Judgement will always be clouded in the beginning especially if you are a romantic. Financially speaking, you should always have hidden assets that are in your name only and nobody knows about. When shtf, you have resources there for you.

Of course this depends on the individual. Though, if you really can't trust them with the money, should you even be married to them?

LTC (Join to see), hell, I do stupid stuff.

There is a difference between a little financial mismanagement and financial ruin. If my spouse had a habit of making poor financial choices I would put her on an allowance.

SFC (Join to see) I saw a MSG once tell me that his wife was nuts for asking for $50 more dollars.....what for you may you ask? Groceries.....yet I had a SPC who spent so much money on PS3 games and making his hooch so great that I talked to him about trying to save it. He then did save $20,000....which his wife took off with two weeks before he came home after she knew that she got caught cheating on him. She then tried to sue to get medical benefits....go figure! You just cannot make this stuff up!
