I am not surprised that the Veterans ID cards which would be authorized for every veteran who does not have either a retired military ID card or VA Disabled Veteran ID card SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
[Edit] The new VA Card is designed for veterans who are not authorized for any other Federal government card. You like I had a VA Disable Veterans card so we don't need one of these. Plus we have our military retired ID cards. This VA Card was not designed to be given gratis. Previously it was announced Veterans were supposed to purchase them from their state government ID card agencies - similar to drivers licenses.
At least the administration seems to be waiting until capability exists before announcing victory unlike the Healthcare debacle. PO2 Ed C.

LTC Stephen F. I concur with PO2 Ed C. with the current VA ID card. It looks good to go with me. What significant change is the VA making. For petes-sake, you can still use the VA by signing in with your SSN#s. I got a VA card and I use that way 99% of the time, when I sign in. They give me a choice and it is just as efficient with no ID card to be truthful in my opinion.

We have discussed this card on rallyPoint since last year when it was first proposed.

PO2 Ed C. - The VA is not actually the author of the legislation. VA is authorized by statute to issue at no cost to a disabled veteran with sufficient service-connect disabilities. The legislation authorizing cards for veterans was intended to authorize states to issue cards to veterans with the states generally responsible for paying for the cards - many states had indicated they would charge a nominal fee similar to a driver's license fee for the cards. Thee cards do not give veterans access to military hospitals, or VA Medical centers, etc. One of the prime purposes was to allow veterans to show the cards to merchants as proof they should get a veterans discount instead of having to bring a DD-214 with them. In Missouri, they put a small banner on the backs of the drivers Lic that states Veteran, however I wouldn't mind having a better ID card showing my veterans status.
