I think we here at RP stumbled upon this idea when the Space Force idea was first floated by Congress. I do wonder, though, if NASA were still actually doing space stuff, would we be facing such a rapid loss in advantage over competitors? The closing of the gap is not entirely on the Air Force's back.

Always nice to see congress blame the service with one hand while strippoing the budget with the other.

Wasn't so much the Congress stripping the budget at all. It was total mismanagement of the contractors running satellite acquisition programs (Ike was right) combined with the Fighter-Pilot-mafia in the USAF/A-Staff at the Pentagon robbing the Space Program portfolios to fund the OTHER stupidly wrong overruns on Fighter projects.
