NSA Fires Back at Tucker Carlson, Says He’s Never Been a Target

The story notes “Suspicion of U.S. intelligence agencies among conservatives has skyrocketed since they were used under the Obama administration to spy upon Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, often using authority to spy on foreigners to catch Americans with whom they were speaking or corresponding” (Washington Times).https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2021/jun/29/nsa-rejects-tucker-carlson-spying-sabotage-claims/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=socialnetwork Carlson’s response: “We made a very straightforward claim: NSA has read my private emails without my permission… Tonight’s statement from the NSA does not deny that instead it comes with this non-sequitur: Tucker Carlson has never been an intel target” (Twitter).

Pasting this from a similar post I commented on.

I'm going to chime in on this as I am very familiar with the rules and laws which dictate what NSA and those who work along side the NSA can do. First, I highly doubt the NSA is spying on Carlson. That would be illegal unless Carlson is communicating with known or suspected international persons of interest (criminals, terrorists, foreign intelligence agents, etc) to the NSA. Is he? If he is and doesn't know this, yes, the NSA might have come across his communications, which is perfectly legal. However, his information, identifying who he is must be masked. It also would mean, he is not the target of the investigation and thus HE is not being spied on (unless they find that he is illegally conspiring with some foreign entity, in which case they would likely pass that information on to the FBI). Second, I take issue with Carlson's suggestion that Gen Nakasone is a "highly-political left-wing four-star general." There is absolutely zero evidence for this and having worked for and briefed the man personally, I can assure everyone he is one of the best senior leaders cyber has ever had in my 26 years working for the Department of Defense. Gen Nakasone has done more for cyber operations than almost all the senior leaders I've known combined. He will be missed when he moves on. Carlson needs to let this one go because he is talking about things he has little to no knowledge about. He is no better than Snowden in his outlandish claims about the NSA right now. Drop it Tucker, the NSA doesn't give a shit about you.
