I am currently stationed in Germany and will ets in about a year. I want to stay here if possible. I read about an “European out” that lets service members ets and still live in Germany. Does anyone know any information about this? How long can I stay in Germany with the European out? Can I get a job on post to stay here longer?

Ask any American GS civilians or contractors on your base if they are military veterans and what they did to stay.

You can receive a European out. There are many factors associated, many of which are restrictions placed by the German Government. You can easily google information related to these requirements. As for hoping for a US job on base, the US has initiated a drawdown, with that will be more base closures. DOD civilians will be fighting for those remaining positions. The competition will be fierce. For the Germans you must prove you are not a financial liability, they you will be able to pay for or have medical coverage. To stay beyond a certain period you must show language proficiency etc. having a girlfriend, or even getting married does not resolve these requirements. As said by others seek guidance of this living there, and check with the German authorities.

Italy had very similar requirements in 1995. They don't want any extra burdens on the government or its people CSM Darieus ZaGara

Yes, Italy is still the same. I have a good friend retired CSM who recently went through the process. CPL Dave Hoover

Like I said, just google your question, rules associated with American citizens living and working in Germany. If you cannot find it send me a private message. ~1591368:SPC Nick Straub]
