Peter Fechter dies trying to escape - History of the Berlin Wall and its fall

On August 17, 1962, East German border guards shot and killed Peter Fechter, 18, who was attempting to cross the Berlin Wall into the Western sector. He became the 27th known victim to die trying to escape East Berlin. I spent a few weeks in West Berlin doing urban warfare training. That wall was the very symbol of totalitarianism.
