Oliver Fisher Winchester was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 30, 1810. Winchester went into business to make dress shirts, but in 1857 purchased the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. The company became Winchester Repeating Arms Co. and he produced rifles used in the Civil War and by American settlers in the West. He died on December 11, 1880.

His widow moved to California, on the advice of spiritualists who told her the ghosts of those killed by Winchester rifles were trying to find her. She followed their advice, beginning a continuous building of the "Winchester Mystery House" in San Jose, a tactic to supposedly keep the ghosts from knowing where she was. The result was a rambling 2-3 story mansion with all sorts of construction oddities, and remarkable features.
