It's a dangerous world out there...I do understand the desire to "downplay" one's faith.

Me, too! But Jesus gave us the Great Commission - our mission as followers of Christ:
Matthew 28:18-20
King James Version
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
We are to "teach all nations" and baptize them. That's a tall order! No worries, because He is with us "always."
That said, He also tells us in Matthew 7:6 (KJV): "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you." Which means if someone is obviously not receptive to the Word of God, not to waste your time on these unrepentant sinners. Don't chase after people who insult or ridicule your faith. Instead, save the "pearls" of wisdom for those who will listen.
By calling myself a Christian up front on all my social media, I announce who I am and what I am about. Then people either ignore it, like it, or ridicule me right away! Saves a lot of time! <><
