While some of us strive for professionalism, we've all had our "special" Soldiers that leave us with memories, and hopefully, leave the Army.

While going through some contacts, I stumbled across the name of a former Soldier who, at one point during a very ugly time in his short-lived career, actually engaged in the following exchange after threatening to 'take out' our Section Sergeant.

MSG: Who do you think you are Private XXX?!?!

PFC: You need to watch your back, I'm a trained killer!

MSG: OH really, Private? And how did YOU become a trained killer!

PFC: I know I am cause I went to Basic Training!

While years ago, this may have been something defused after a trip to the woodline for some motivational PT, the shift in Army culture makes this a bit more frightening. So as Leaders, what have you seen/heard? How would you react?

While I was a Platoon Sergeant, we were at NTC prepping for Afghanistan...one of my Treatment Team Leaders got tired of hearing the truth about his performance (it hurt a bit). All of the sudden he tells me that I'm lucky these rounds (pointing to his M4) were blanks and not real....... Well,... FM 22-102 went into effect.......

Even today I would not be against taking this particular individual out in the woodline to practice his Army combatives/hand to hand combat skills. No weapons just fists and lots of trees to bounce him off of. Half hour later, we have both gotten a good workout, and he has learned that he isn't the trained killer he thought he was. Why is it that FNG's and attitudes seem to go hand in hand?

A little bit of combatives can go a long way. This Soldier got some physical training to get the immediate anger out of his system, and was quite a productive Soldier for the next few months. Unfortunately, he had some other issues that eventually led to his dismissal from the ranks.
