To expand on what MAJ Byron Oyler said DO NOT use your GI Bill for EMT training. The class is a few hundred dollars, but with the way GI Bill is calculated you are losing a whole lot more money than the $500+ your EMT-B will cost

If you're taking your classes online there is a separate BAH rate for that. I suggest you go through the VA GI Bill site, it's all laid out fairly clear on there as long as you're asking about a degree program. Certification programs get a bit more complicated

Don't know where you received EMT training but every school within a two hour drive from home charges at least $4500 for basic EMT/AEMT. I used part of my GI Bill because it was the only way I could afford the class without soaking up undesired student loans.

MSgt Steven Holt, NRP, CCEMT-P if you paid for EMT-B then you paid about 10x too much. While I don't have the long on hand, the cost of EMTB while in one of the most expensive states in the US is under $500.

SFC (Join to see) - BTW.... I didn't do EMT-B. TN didn't recognize EMT-B in 2012 when I went through training. I got EMT-IV which is equivalent to the current AEMT level. We had First Responder (roughly EMT-B and was around $500), EMT-IV Tech, and Paramedic. If this posts correctly, here's a quick synopsis of the cost PER SEMESTER. Books/supplies were extra (an additional $400 or so per course for me). I've heard of other states being cheaper than TN but this is/was the going rate for our local community colleges. Paramedic has similar costs but is THREE semesters instead of the EMT-B/AEMT courses of one semester each.

201280 Fall Term 2012 Term Detail Detail Code Description Charge Payment Balance
AHEM Allied Health Fee - EMT $200.00
CAMF Program Services Fee $7.00
SGAF SGA Activity Fee $8.00
TFAL Instate tuition - Fall $1,485.00
TIEF International Education Fee $11.00
TTAF Technology Access Fee $112.50
PWCR Web Credit Card Payment $18.00
TPPY Third Party Contract Payment $1,805.50
Net Term Balance $0.00

You dont want to use your GI Bill for EMT. Paramedic yes but not EMT. Now if you are going for an associates or bachelors in EMS that is a different story as you will be taking a full class load.

Why not, sir? I used my GI Bill for EMT. It was the only way I could pay for the $4500+ class without soaking undesired student loans.

MSgt Steven Holt, NRP, CCEMT-P That price sounds like paramedic, not EMT-B.

Post 9/11 pays out a monthly stipend according to BAH rates and according to the locaion of the school, but strictly online courses pay out at the national average i think $900.

To have the local amount, you need to attend at least one 'in-person' class. I do know that with covid happening, as long as the course was listed as in person, it wont be affected if its being ran on zoom

Have you applied for other benefits such as fafsa? I dont know about all schools, but if you qualify itll help with tuition and costs

I'm checking all options. I'm out of in person classes at my local school. That's why I'm looking for something extra curricula
