I'm a fan fan of "practice makes perfect", maybe because I played softball and various musical instruments growing up and that's what my coaches and teachers said. But practice doesn't always make perfect, sometimes practice simply makes proficient.

Can someone do a task with great success without much practice?, there is always that possibility. But, it's practicing a task that allows us to preform at a consistently higher level when we need to. In some scenarios I think practicing a task allows people to perform under pressure without panicking, such as an EMT at the scene of an accident.

PERFECT practice makes PERFECT Performance.  you can practice how to do something the wrong way over and over.  All you have done is ingrained the wrong way to do something.  During Physical training, you practice fully extending your arms and lowering your body as a single unit until your upper arms break the horizontal plane.  If you don't, when the APFT comes around, you don't achieve the standard...but you "practiced" everyday.  Same with Basic Rifle Marksmanship.  Practice perfect trigger squeeze, breathing, sight picture/site alignment and steady positioning while training or you waste time, taxpayer money for ammunition and quite possibly your life if you need to put a bullet in the chest of your enemy.

Fantastic response!  I completely agree.  Perfection comes when we display (conduct) excellence in the small moments in life, in military activities, in the workplace.  If we choose to just practice for the sake of practicing, we are missing the point.  If we decide we are going to be the best and we practice so we can become the best, we get advice from others, look for those who do it better than we do it, watch videos to improve etc. etc.  Thanks for the reply Jason.  Thanks also to you Emily

Not only does that speak to me, but I have also always enjoyed the quote "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast."

It's right up there with "fake it 'til you make it" Maybe not 100% true, but more than good enough most of the time.

No, practice often won't make perfect. But it'll make a damn sight better than wishing.
