Wasn't this thing supposed to replace tanks when they first came up with it?

There are 10 Stryker variants on two chassis. The one you're thinking of is the mgs4 Mobile Gun System.

Yes the MGS has 108mm cannon, they originally were supposed to have 120mm but the cannon was too big for the Stryker. Strykers were never intended to replace tanks. They decided to go with Strykers after the 1st Gulf War when the 82nd was the only unit between Saddam in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Feeling was that the division wouldn't have taken thousands of casualties had Saddam pushed further forward and Strykers are supposed to be the "happy" medium

So, instead of dusting off the M1 tanks, or gassing up the Bradleys, the idea to spend money to change cannons on Strykers is the way people want to go? Interesting.

I think the more interesting thing this article points out is that Russia is being seen as a bigger threat again. If they need the upgrade, & the threat is truly legitimate, then go for it. Perhaps in the meantime, produce the weapons so they can be fitted quickly if escalation occurs?
