Great philosophy, but here is the elephant in the room - "SEALs, DELTA, and Rangers are selected from the top mental categories. Not so for our straight leg close combat units, both Army and Marine,” Scales said. “Why not? ---- Simply because there are not enough people in the "top mental categories" to go around.
There are many smart people in the infantry, but let's face it, there are plenty who are not so smart. Would there be some sort of "middle tier" between regular infantry and SOF where these Top Gun grunts would reside consisting of all the top performing infantry soldiers and Marines? What sort of effect would that have on your not Top Gun infantry units?

It's an interesting conundrum. Why wouldn't you want your brightest in the most demanding positions? I heard that the top NCO's are culled for Drill Sergeant duty. Does that mean line companies never see the best NCO's? Who then is left to lead and inspire the masses? I think any branch, any MOS, selection should be mission driven. Take the Disney model for example. They know in a heart beat whether or not they want you to work for them. The zinger comes when they ask you what you'd like to do. What job do you want? They know that if you are happy in your job you will tend to excel. Wouldn't this be the same in any job? Why wouldn't the military want the brightest who WANT do do a job and are well-suited for it?
