SGT (Join to see) I think it'd be cool, or if not IRC itself, perhaps real-time chat functionality built in.

Same thing, sir. The IRC channel wouldn't have to be hosted on the website. It would be reachable from desktop apps as well - mIRC, Xchat, hexchat.
