Humility is all well and good in any number of professions. But I want my generals to kick ass and take names later, and slap a few shell-shocked soldiers around to motivate the troops.

When Patton slapped a few shell-shocked soldiers around to motivate the troops, it didn’t exactly inspire motivation in the ranks, above or below.
If a leader has to hit a subordinate to motivate anyone, that leader ultimately doesn’t really understand motivation.

I suspect, for the soldier in question, it's a far better motivational technique than an Article 99 or a 104. Goddamn, a slap is so permanent. Heaven forbid.

It's very simple. Organizations exist for a reason...leaders exist to keep organizations moving forward in a coordinated, purposeful direction. Leaders who do so with genuine respect and concern for the experience, talent, and well-being of those they lead get the most consistently positive results. Such persons have little to no time for ego-often because they realize "they" are nothing, outside of the successes of the whole.
