I pondered this notion ever since I walked into my basic training unit back in 88'. 20+ years later I'm still pondering. . . . Could the military succeed if it had to work for a profit?

I think the questions begs another question? For profit from whom, to the highest bidder, which ever country paid the most for protection? I would have to ponder how this would actually play. I don't really see how the Military could be a for profit organization without these types of questions being answered first. That would possibly make each and every troop a merc for ire to the highest bidder also and so from that perspective it could very well degrade moral and professionalism as well as any form of chain of command.

If the military were a for-profit organization, it would be better equipped and have less red tape.

However, that would make every servicemember a merc, and that distinction would erode what is left of the moral character of the armed services.

Just my 2 bits.
