It could have to do with the fact that the Vatican City is only about .17 square miles in size and essentially consists of a Church and a gathering area, and has less than 1000 people in actual population.

where is the compassion? Why hasn't the Vatican opened it's doors to the poor and less fortunate? I see it as a double standard...

No. Room.
Look in any Catholic Church in the world and tell me again that they don't help the poor.
There is plenty to be critical of, but this is not one of them.
