I read through the referenced article and am not sure what the specific vulnerabilities are for refugees from Manus Island and Nauru SPC Britanny *Winnie* Balthaser
"According to the Immigration Department, 675 refugees on Manus Island had been given positive Refugee Status Initial Assessment Notifications, as well as 941 on Nauru."
I understand that the Australian Senate "proposed changed to the Migration Act, urging the Senate to pass the bill which would ban people on Manus Island and Nauru from ever coming to Australia."
I do not understand why the USA would agree that the refugees should come to this nation as opposed to Papua New Guinean or even New Zealand.

LTC Stephen F. I had found another article regarding this and it said "Australia's two leading political parties, the ruling Liberal-National coalition and the Labor opposition, both support tough asylum policies.
They say the journey the asylum seekers make is dangerous and controlled by criminal gangs, and they have a duty to stop it.
The coalition government made Australia's asylum policy even tougher when it took power in 2013, introducing Operation Sovereign Borders, which put the military in control of asylum operations.
Under this policy military vessels patrol Australian waters and intercept migrant boats, towing them back to Indonesia or sending asylum seekers back in inflatable dinghies or lifeboats." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-28189608
