The cover letter still confuses me. My first cover letter was equivalent to a summary of all the military-specific equipment I knew. That's funny to think about. Now my cover letter is non-existent. Couldn't it be equivalent to the about page on my blog?

I'm an advocate of including a cover letter. Indeed, a cover letter is a "summary" of your experience. Think of it as being the "attention grabber..here's why you should read my resume in it's completion." I've attached a sample cover letter, which is similar to what I've used in the past employment searches.

Thanks Chanda Wade. I've never seen this example so I'm saving it to work on later.

You're right. The key to gaining visibility is to be one of the first to apply. I usually suggest to job seekers that they apply to a job within the first two days of the job being opening, which will increase the chances of your résumé being reviewed. Another key is to ensure your résumé aligns with the job description--meaning, you shouldn't apply using the same résumé. These two tips, in addition to what the article states, should make your résumé stand out.
