That is exactly what it says. So, if I sell myself into indentured servitude, which I did, and anyone that joined the military did. You signed a contract that basically stated that you were owned by the government for 8 years. They provided us with a place to live, food to eat, medical, and some money for things that we might want to buy or need. In this modern arrangement, I decided that I would not date or have children until my contract had expired. What would keep an someone who had made a contract to sell themselves for money that they got themselves for 6 years of service to not get married and not have children during that span of time? Then, if they just could not hold out, they were free and could go out and be productive and buy back there children from their former boss. There is a difference. A person that would accept the awl in the ear was a person that felt as though they could not make it in life on their own and that they needed someone to keep them. The became a ward of the household along with their wife and children. Those men were not able to make it in there own so the made the decision to stay under the household of someone that could take care of them and would let them work in their household. Biblical times were completely different than today and/or Civil War times. Look at the way in which the tribes of Israel moved about and stayed together. The way in which families stayed together and worked together. Families would look out for one another. It is likely that an indentured servant would have been an outsider to a society and that could help get him established. There were many indentured servants that used that method to make their way to America early on. Slavery did exist. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt for over 400 years.

SPC Paul Tucker - assuming, for the sake of argument and against all of the evidence, that the Israelis were slaves in Egypt, that does not make subsequent slavery by the Israelis moral. Second, enlistment in the military is in no ways the equivalent of indentured servitude nor slavery. You were paid. You could enter into contracts and leases in your own name. You could purchase property and title it in your name. You talk about it being a social net, and again, assuming that is true for the sake of argument, it only is a social net for Jewish males. Everyone else who became a slave were permanent slaves. If you sold your daughter to pay off a debt, she didn't get released, ever.

Owning other humans as property is immoral.

Your morality is based upon your own compass, which is a sliding scale. Anything that you claim to be moral or immoral today may be immoral or moral in ten years. Morality as society sees it is always subjective and based upon mob rule. While, morality of the Bible never changes. God's morality does not changes. The Bible does not change, however its interpretation may have changed over the years and its implementation seems to change daily. One never has to own slaves. The Bible does not command ownership of slaves. It outlines laws with dealing with indentured servirude, where one person sells themselve to another person for a set number of years for a given amount of money. That is a contract for hire over time for a set price. You may disagree with the terms of the contract, but the terms are the terms. Both parties knew the terms upfront. Work out a different deal. Learn a trade and work for an artisan. You act as though being an indentured servent was the only game in town. That is simply not true and is disingenuous. just like todays wellfare system, the indentured servant system and the permant slave system was of the time. It was a way for those who had nothing, no family, no inheritance, no wealth, no status, to join a houshold and be a member of that household and have protection, a place to live, be provided for, and be able to have a family. They would be a servent of the household in return. I see that you do not understand that structure. It was nit tye same nor was it intended to be the same as the Slavery the you have in you mind. You can feel free to think what you like.
