It's a certificate of service and is mostly for decoration. It's your DD-214 that counts.

So back to my original question what is a DD 256 MC and is it equal to a DD 214

Cpl Larry Walls - No, your DD-256MC is not equal to a DD-214. The DD-256MC is a certificate suitable for framing so you can hang it up on your "I love me wall." It is only suitable for use in applying for veterans benefits when it also contains all your pertinent service information, which very few do. Your DD-214 has your dates of service, as well as your character of service, and that is what is needed when applying for most veterans benefits.
