Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the June 2nd edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Lunar Occultation of Venus." Perspective is everything. While most of us (who are up early enough) could see a conjunction between the Moon and planets last week, people living in a band from Southeast Asia to the Indian Ocean witnessed a lunar occultation (the passage of the Moon across the line of sight between an observer and another celestial object). The subject was the planet Venus, and this animated GIF was constructed with frames shot from Reunion Island on May 27th. Venus emerged from behind the Moon about 50 minutes later.
