Strategic bombers give us options and complicate the enemy's problem in ways fighters cannot. When a fighter pilot talks about range, he's talking hundreds of nm. When a bomber pilot talks about range, he's talking thousands of nm. Look at a map of China and notice the border with Kazakhstan, the other '-stans, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar. Bombers can go the other way 'round.

I sometimes wonder if no force is better than half a force. It seems that we spend just as much maintaining an inadequate force as we do in maintaining an adequate one.

Yes but it can be depressing if you allow yourself to think about it that way. I suppose we COULD withdraw from the western pacific entirely, but it's not just nature that abhors a vacuum.
