The biggest key to finances is living within your means. Maxing out your credit and paying tons of interest is one of the best ways to become financially unstable.

Great advice. And living within your means does NOT mean paying all your bills and having zero left to save at the end of every month.

For me...downsizing after a divorce was the best thing to happen to me! Cause me to see that I didn't need as much as I thought and that most things are just attachments. I was a huge weight off my shoulders to not identify with all the stuff I had accumulated. Now I live within my means and live very simply as possibly. It's a helleva lot easier and peaceful that's for sure.

I agree. I experience this when my family relocated and sold/donated 80% of our home. When we asked our kids which items they absolutely had to keep - all three of them had the same answer, "Hmm, none?" Life immediately became more simple with less stress!

Our children were young and couldn't understand why we couldn't buy whatever was wanted. We said we didn't have the money and they said "just go to that machine that gives you money".

LCDR (Join to see) - I can remember those days. As a PO-1 with 3 dependents in the late 70's we actually came within a few dollars of qualifying for food stamps.

Omg. When the Army went too mandatory direct deposit I knew it was going to be a disaster for some. I kept getting bad check reports from one of my troops and when I discussed the matter with him he told me he thought he was good because he had plenty of checks left over. [Facepalm] Lol

The thing that helped our family the most was when we went through a really tough financial spell and got rid of all our credit cards. Spending only what we truly have in our accounts, and pausing before major purchases to make sure they are either necessary or worthwhile, has made life far simpler and less stressful in the long run.
