My experience has shown that in the civilian world it's all about who Management likes. The individual who knows how to shmooze, BS, and say what the boss wants to hear (regardless of reality) is likelier to get the awards, bonuses, and promotions. My suggestion is this: If your end goal is that corner office, learn to play the game and know that accomplishing anything is secondary. Otherwise concentrate on your work ethic, knowledge, capability, and personal responsibility, and know that the rewards you receive are truly earned.
