So I have been an hospital medic for the last 3 years, and have never been a line medic. I'm hoping this will be my chance to head out with an infantry unit, and use my field trauma skills. Please let me know any info on this type of unit.

Well you're going to a BSB which isn't exactly the line. I would tell you now to keep your head up and be resilient towards whatever is thrown your way. BSBs can be emotionally exhausting.

A lot depends on the Command and whom controls the medics. When I was in 3/4 ABCT, the BSB CDR and CSM controlled where to place the medics, in either the FSCs or BSB's C. Company. You should discuss your professional development goals with your Commander. From my experience if you want to be a Line Medic then folks will assist you to get you in the right spot. Best of luck to you.

Yes, you will be in a Role II capacity. This consists of 24hr continuous operations. Sick call early morning and evening hours, injuries and illness throughout the 24hr period. As a prior Treatment PSG, I would make sure my Medics were up on Table VIII, and MASCAL operations. I usually slept in the drash or tempertent- whichever we set up. Oh, If you are a coffee drinker- bring your own pot & supplies.

LTC Martin, I'm hoping this is the case, I plan to express my aspirations to my command, being a line medic has been something I fought for a long time in my last unit, but was not able to due to being stuck in ER operations. Thank you for the advice.

704th's Commander I believe is still LTC Carl Mason, although he should be short final by now if he's still there. He is a pretty squared away guy. 704th is the BSB for the infantry BCT. Lots of light Infantry problems to solve. The C Co is like any other C Co in a BSB. 40 patient hold. Ambulance Platoon etc. hugs, drugs, and specs. they are light so it is FLAs not tracks or Strykers. Biggest issue in the Brigade is movement just because of their mission and MTOE.

Roger that LTC Mackay, BSB operations from what similar info I've been hearing is more interventional nursing care and support based. whether I'm doing that or end up on line, I'm grateful for the experience.

Not sure about this unit, but I can tell you that being a line medic is truly much better than being a hospital medic. At least, IMHO, anyway.

I do not know the experience, but I'm hoping too. As for being in a hospital, I saw more trauma in civilian EMT world then i ever did at a military MTF.

SGT (Join to see) - I was stuck on a Med/Surg ward as a medic. Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot being on that ward......but I certainly missed being in the dirt on the line

I have done both Line Medic and Hospital medic. Medicine changes, Field Medicine particularly . While stationed at 2AD FWD Garlstedt Germany. In garrison I spent more time in the motor pool than a clinic. However, once in the field life as a line medic wasn't bad. I remember being told that after being a line medic the Army wanted medics to rotate back to an a medical command. The cycle was Line, Medical. Line or you could do back to back line, line or Medical, Medical one time only for back to back assignments.
During a Conference at Fort Sam the Medical Command expressed the need for Medical proficiency training when medics were assigned to Line Units and the need to get them back to a Hospital at leas after two or three years in a Line Unit.
When I Flew as a Flight Medic out of Fort Knox in the mid 80's everyone on that bird had at least two to three years experience in an Emergency Room or Intensive Care Unit and no one was below the Rank of SGT.
Yes being a Line medic is at the heart of what we do, but, for career progression you must consider Flight Medic, Special Forces Medical SGT or even the LPN School. The Medical assignments are not always in a Plush Hospital or clinic. You have CASH units Forward Surgical Teams their is a hole host of Medical field assignments to include being a Sea going Army Medic on a Boat owned by the U.S. Army at Fort Eustis Va. the first time I ever encountered Army Medics that collected Sea Pay.
