Service medals usually are line entries without orders. Soldiers who are eligible should ensure the line entry is listed according to their applicable service. Medals are then issued (seldom awarded). In my unit, we'd personally present them whenever possible in formation or simply show up unexpectedly and do it. Same for Good Conduct medal. Some of them such as Good Conduct also have a certificate.

LTC Wasserman, me too. I remembered when entering AD seeing one fellow who had one star...he seemed really old!

An officer came to my bedside in the hospital to give me my Purple Heart. That was the only service medal that I received directly. The rest were just line items on my DD214.

We ARE really old----There are only 4 total periods for this. Guess we missed out on Korea.

I am finding that some people are not being awarded the NDSM while on duty.Its not until they are out that the NDSM is showing up on DD214.

NDSM is awarded based on dates of service. IIRC, when the most recent window opened it was up to the individuals S-1 to load it into the SM's fiche.
The two most current windows were:
August 2, 1990 – November 30, 1995
September 11, 2001 – Present
There are some other minor rules as well. What is the specific instance of the person not being given the award prior to ETS?
