When I first enlisted into the Coast Guard, the CMO at MEPS DQd me for a Varicocele. It’s just barely larger than my left testicle but it’s asymptomatic and doesn’t impair my physical capabilities at all so MEPS recommended a waiver. A 3rd Party medical consult said the same thing and recommended my waiver be approved. The USCG Surgeon General approved and I was good to go for boot camp.
Just got out of the Coast Guard with no medical issues last year and tried enlisting into the National Guard but my medical waiver got denied by my State Guard Surgeon General for the exact same condition despite the previous 3 Docs signing off on it with no issue. My recruiter was stunned, he told me he regularly gets guys into the Guard with medical issues way worse issues than me all the time and couldn’t believe I got rejected.
Working with a Army Reserves recruiter right now, he said because the CG approved he thinks there’s a chance but I’m starting to have doubts... the Guard is known for approving waivers that the Big Army won’t while the Coast Guard approves the fewest of any branch so I’m confused AF right now! Do I have a shot of getting in? Anyone else here in the Army have to get a med waiver approved for a Varicocele?
FWIW, my one medical condition notwithstanding I’m fully healthy with no disqualifying medical or conditions.

From my experience it all comes to how well-written your doctor's note is saying that he thinks you're good. I've gotten way harder med waives approved then that.

Jimmy Johnson and obviously I can't type so the fact that I got things approved is just amazing... but I wish I can edit my comments with the app and not have to log in with my computer this is a little bit ridiculous.

From the medical instruction us recruiters look at:
*disqualifying condition:
Current varicocele, unless it is:
(1) On the left side only.
(2) Asymptomatic and smaller than the testes.
(3) Reducible.
(4) Without associated testicular atrophy.
There’s a chance.

My condition meets all those requirements except it is just barely larger than my left testicle... hopefully the Army Docs don’t get too hung up about that part

That’s why they always ask for the medical documents. Our chief medical officers at MEPS will send it up for a waiver after reviewing it. Jimmy Johnson

Jimmy, I recommend that you edit your profile to change it from being listed as a civilian to being a Coast Guard veteran.

Never made it to the fleet, got an uncharacterized discharged from the Coast Guard in less than 180 days of swearing in (Administrative separation, not medical.) I wish I could say I’m a veteran but I’m not (yet). Just got to be content with being a Civilian for now until I get into the Army.
