In the Army Reserves, will I get to select the base location where I will drill?

Usually a Reserve recruiter will show you what slots are available for the MOS you are wanting and then slot you in the unit you choose that has the opening, now once you start to rise in rank, you may or may not have to move to achieve rank. I have know guys who spent their entire time in one unit.

I have some experience from what I've seen being in a USAR unit. You have more freedom with the USAR since you can go to other states. You are typically capped for travel reimbursement by the company of up to $500 and the unit will pay for your lodging. With the NG you have to request a conditional release and sometimes being released is hard based on their needs. In addition, if your unit has no travel funds, the CDR will authorize you to pull your weekend duty at a unit closest to you.

There's a caveat on the Guard's policy of having you drill anywhere in the state. Im not sure of every state's policy, but the CANG had a milage policy. If you lived beyond 50 miles of your drill location, the unit would put you up in a nearby hotel for drill weekends. It was still a pain in the ass, but not too bad.
