I know it's semantics, but "hard landing" is a misnomer. It is a real thing that exists and is different than a "crash" however if someone dies, it's pretty hard to say it wasn't a crash.

My heart and prayers go out to the Marine and family as well as those injured. Training accidents are sometimes harder to take than war casualties because of the allusion of safety. Keep in mind everything we do has risk.
