Leaders, if you were to receive a token of appreciation from a working contact in or outside of the military (i.e. a coffee mug, multi-tool or golf bag) what would be a good example of something useful or practical to you?

I know it's considered "cheesy" by a lot of the new batch of Soldiers, but I'm a sucker for a coin. Those are never unappreciated, at least by me...

I equate the given of coins to the dark ages of giving alms to the poor to appease them.

The problem I have with coins is when self-entitled persons do ridiculous things like hold mass formations to 'award' a coin.  That is the complete antithesis of what a coin is supposed to be - an on-the-spot 'atta-boy', not a way to grandstand and talk about 'how hard it is to earn one of my coins'.

SGT Beely, since I am an awarder of coins, I will bear that in mind... Good to know. *into the toolbox it goes*

Thanks for saying this. I always feel like the odd-man out whenever I say I actually like getting coins.

I love coins....rather have them than most things. But if you insist on giving an COA or plaque of some sort PLEASE spell the name of the Soldier correctly. I had a Cdr that kept spelling my name wrong on things and I actually gave them back my PCS award because after 3 years they still couldn't get it right. Appreciation is a great thing but show you appreciate them enough to spell their name correctly!!!!

I feel your pain there SFC Wesemann, Not only do I have to check my last name on EVERYTHING, but my first name is spelt Cristopher, no "h". I'm always going back into S1...

Agreed. I got a coin for being honor graduate in my COBC course, and they engraved my name on it - spelled wrong. I brought this to their attention, and they assured me they'd mail me a corrected one, which they never did. Nothing really brings home the importance of a gift when even the giver couldn't care less about it.

I know Exactly what you’re talking about my name has been spelled so many ways I started to wonder if I was spelling it correctly
