Effective immediately, the Coast Guard will fund 75 percent of tuition costs up to $187.50 per credit hour, with a $2,250 cap, through Sept. 30, 2014. Coast Guardsmen will be responsible for any costs beyond those limits.

What's old is new again....prior to 9/11, TA was 75%, I used it in the early '90s and then again after 9/11 when it was at 100%.....might hurt the individual SM a little, but those that are serious about startting or finishing a degree will utilize it.

CSM Maynard If you look at the contract it talks about annex A and B and C if you have one. That is where the GI Bill, ACF, SLRP, Cash bonuses are placed. The contract says all other things promised are in those annexes, which was different paces back in the day, however now it is just two, the GI Bill and a one dynamic annex which contains anything else (usually 10 pages or so) that you will be getting from your enlistment. TA was never in a contract, it has always been a benefit of being in not a guarantee.

SFC Gannon - annnnnnnnd roger.

Usually those annexes contained your "bonus" stuff or MOS of choice or assignment of choice.

I cannot recall ever seeing a "benefit" in a contract though. Those are "dictated" by US Code and Law.

CSM correct, there never was anything other then Pay grade, if your coming in at a higher grade that is in the contract. All other information like MOS, Bonus and such are in those annex's that are listed in the contract as what will be honored in connection with the contract. Just like the recruiter told you like myself, I am sure, that you will have free medical and dental, TA that will pay $X.XX a course or semester hour, and free room and board, these benefits are not in a contract but were told to us as a means to get us to join. Agree??

SFC Gannon, hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I would probably agree to the extent that the Recruiter told us what the current benefits were at the time and maybe they alluded that those benefits would stay the same.

So probably sin of ommission - not telling us the whole story. I can't say that they specifically told me that I would get free medical/dental for me and my family for life or any other benefit like that.

Of course now, there is that statement in the contract that asks if anything else has been promised to you that is not included in the contract and I'm pretty sure we all signed that stating "NO" - which is our confirmation that what was only in the contract was what we were promised.

I can't say that I agree with tuition sharing. Obviously I'd rather not have to pay anything but these days that isn't really realistic or with our budget, feasible. This is very similar to policies that were in effect when I joined the Army in '98. The Army paid 75% and I paid everything else. i don't remember what the cap was at that time. I was told by the people at the Ed-center back then that the GI bill could be used to offset the cost for my portion of the TA though. I'm not sure, from what you state, if that is the case here.
