They always have a point turkey to conduct reconnaissance. Once the area is cleared they will rush to new assembly area. They try to avoid danger areas and being caught in the open. They can work on their spacing. No I am not drunk, just trying to see the world through turkey eyes.

Same goes for Canada Geese which mate for life MAJ Ken Landgren. One always is alert at the various points of the perimeter while the rest of the group is eating, taking care of the goslings, etc.
I think you would find the sentry and point behavior in any group of birds that flock.
